Cello Tuning

  • The four strings on the cello are tuned in perfect fifths.
  • An "A" tuning fork, digital tuner, pitch pipe or a piano may be used to assist with tuning.

  • The cello is tuned to the following pitches (click on the note to hear the pitch):

  •

  • Fine tuners or pegs may be used to tune the cello. If the string sounds lower than the correct pitch, gently turn the fine tuner or peg to the right until it reaches the correct pitch. If the string sounds higher than the correct pitch, gently turn the peg or tuner to the left.
  • Many beginning cellists find it helpful to use a digital tuner to tune their cello, and some models detect and display when the note being tuned matches the desired pitch. Visit our Music Store - Rosin & Accessories page for a sampling of tuners.
